Religious spaces have not always been safe spaces for people with diverse gender and sexual identities. But Unitarian Universalism fiercely proclaims that all of who you are is sacred – all of who you are is welcome. UUCR has been a leading LGBTQ+ ally in the Roanoke Valley for decades. We work hard for radical inclusion of LGBTQ+ perspectives, experiences, and participation at all levels of church life. There is a place for you here, whether you want simply to attend services, join a group activity, or follow a call to lay leadership to help us forge an even brighter future.

We are a longtime member in good standing of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Welcoming Congregation Program. Guided by our UUCR Pride Team, this means that we:

  • Join the minister in planning two or more regular Sunday services on topics of special concern to the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Make note in our communications and during Sunday services of key LGBTQ+ days of observance.
  • Plan and offer at least one educational event for the congregation about LGBTQ+ issues (e.g., anti-trans policies in the Roanoke County School System; how to respect others’ preference for gender-neutral personal pronouns).
  • Support a local or national project that uplifts the dignity of LGBTQ+ communities (e.g., participate in the Southwest Virginia Pride and Roanoke Pride festivals).
