Building Racial Justice Takes All of Us:
The Living the Pledge to End Racism Workshop
The Pledge to End Racism is a personal commitment to work on ourselves and with others throughout our community to address racism in all its forms. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke and Williams Memorial Baptist Church invite you to participate in the Living the Pledge to End Racism Workshop.
What is the Living the Pledge Workshop?
The Living the Pledge Workshop is a 12-hour series designed to give participants confidence in their ability to talk about and confront racism wherever it lives. During the workshop, participants
- Explore their experience with people of other races and examine their own implicit biases
- Learn how to speak up when they witness racist acts
- Learn how to recognize and challenge systemic racism
- Develop a personal action plan to support the work toward ending racism in our community, our culture, and our lives.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for people who want to deepen their understanding and commitment to anti-racism, whether they have prior anti-racism training or have never taken a class about racism before. It is suitable for adults and high-school aged teens and is open to all who attend Williams Memorial Baptist Church or the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke or who have signed the Pledge to End Racism.
When is the workshop?
May 8, 15, and 22, and June 5, 12, and 19, 2021, all Saturdays, 9-11 a.m. There will be no session on May 29 (Memorial Day weekend).
What is the workshop format?
The Living the Pledge Workshop will be conducted virtually via Zoom. All sessions will include presentations, videos, and large and small group discussions with trained facilitators. Participants will be asked to prepare for each session by reading articles and watching short videos that will be sent via weekly e-mails. To fully participate, you will need a laptop, desktop, or large tablet with web camera and microphone. A smart phone will not work well for this purpose. You will also need access to e-mail, internet, and a printer in order to do the on-line pre-session assignments. If there is need, we will offer an optional session to help anyone unfamiliar with Zoom learn to use this simple online meeting tool.
Space is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis. Please do not sign up unless you can commit to attending all six sessions. If you are interested in participating in the workshop but cannot attend on all of the dates, please let us know and we will notify you of future workshop dates when they become available.
To register for the Living the Pledge to End Racism Workshop, please send an e-mail with your name, church affiliation, and a request to register to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The deadline for registration is April 23.
