RevAlex comes to us from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waynesboro, VA, where he's served as Interim Minister since July, 2013. Before being called to Waynesboro, he served two years with our congregation in Blacksburg, and a decade with our congregation in Greensboro, NC. Even earlier in his ministerial career, he served our Maryland congregations in Finksburg, Chestertown, and Salisbury.
RevAlex is a native Virginian who's lived most of his life elsewhere. Prior to becoming a minister, he was a social worker and science educator. His Unitarian Universalist self-identity grew out of early teenage conversations about hell with his Presby-minister-father - RevAlex just couldn't buy into the concept! His first experience of a UU congregation was in Charleston, SC, where he'd fled to be a beach-bum after dropping out of graduate school. Over the next fifteen years, his career as a science educator/consultant provided opportunity for travel that allowed him to visit many of our congregations across the nation. RevAlex says all that visiting was great but what was really wonderful was having his passion for Unitarian Universalism awakened by our congregation in Lancaster, PA, where he moved in 1987. That congregation called upon him to "know and be known". They also invited him into service - teaching Sunday School, doing coffee, helping with fundraising, facilitating a covenant group, visiting folk in hospital, going to the Mountain, preaching. Between the knowing and the serving, that congregation birthed a wholeness and happiness in RevAlex that inspires him in his ministry to this day.
Over his last fourteen years of ministry in the Southeast, RevAlex served on both the TJD District Executive Advisory Team and the District Board. He's supervised three summer student ministries and two professional year-long ministerial internships. An active participant in UU clergy groups everywhere he's served, he looks forward to UUCR taking a leadership role in the continuing development of the newly formed Blue Ridge Cluster of the Southern Region of the UUA.
RevAlex is married to Ray Wurzburger, Professor of Accounting at New River Community College in Dublin, VA.
